The idea for this purse came from the fact that I'm not a big fan of house scarves but I still wanted to knit something HP related. I liked the idea of the Dark Mark, so I drew one up and decided to put it on a purse. I finished putting the purse together around 3am, 9 hours before going to see Goblet of Fire on the first day it was open.

The design for the purse changed a bit because I originally had a different idea as to how I was going to put it together, so I had knit the front and back panels separately. I think the easiest way to do the bag is to knit the front and back in one big vertical piece (starting from the top of the chart), then sewing up the sides and attaching the strap. Note: You may find that your gauge changes when you go from doing the chart to knitting the back--my gauge got a lot bigger, so watch out for that.

I used the metallic thread to make a sparkly border around the outside of the chart since the book describes the Dark Mark as looking like it was made up of "emerald stars" (and I thought making the whole Dark Mark chart sparkly might be too much).

These instructions are meant to be a guide rather than a proper pattern. I've seen the Dark Mark chart used on sweaters, felted bags, shawls, and cross-stitched on a change purse. Use your imagination!

Pattern:
Cast on 48 stitches in color A, then purl 1 row (so you'll be starting the chart on the knit side).

Starting from the top of the chart (i.e. the top of the skull):
Row 1: k5 in color A, knit the first row of the chart (using A for the background and B for the Dark Mark), k3 in color A.
Row 2: p3 in color A, purl the second row of the chart, p5 in color A.

Continue in this fashion until you finish the chart.

For a bag with the Dark Mark on one side only, knit 66 rows of stockinette in color A.

For a bag with the Dark Mark on both sides, knit 10 rows of stockinette in color A. Repeat the chart, this time starting from the bottom of the chart.

BO all stitches. Fold fabric in half and seam both sides.

Purse Strap:
Using a double strand of color A, CO 10 stitches and do 1x1 ribbing (k1 p1) for about 3 feet. Attach the strap to the bag by sewing the ends to both sides of the bag by the seams (you can sew the ends to either the outside or the inside of the bag--whichever you prefer). Don't worry if it appears a little small, as it will stretch a lot when you will use the purse.

Sew in the metallic thread by doing backstitches on the surface of the yarn, all around border of the the Dark Mark(s).

Sew in the lining and zipper, once again starting with a running stitch to hold them in place.
